The Assisteens, a philanthropic group of teenage girls which started in 1958, is still going strong in Glendale. The current group consists of 61 girls, seventh through twelfth grades. The girls range in age from 12 to 18. Each Assisteen must give at least 36 hours of volunteer work per year to their philanthropic programs. They fund their philanthropic programs and assist the chapter.
OPERATION SCHOOL BELL(R) Books for Children Assisteens supply books, underwear and socks for children in this program. Senior Neighborhood Fellowship Luncheon Favors Assisteens prepare favors for monthly Assistance League of Glendale's luncheons for senior citizens. Friends of the Desi Geetsman Foundation City of Hope Assisteens decorate the pediatric ward for Halloween, Christmas and Springtime and assist with holiday parties for patients and their families. Community Outreach Adopt-A-Family Baskets for the Holidays Basaskets for the Holidays Assisteens furnish clothing, school supplies, grocery scrip and toys to needy families Toys for Tots Assisteens contribute toys annually to the Toys for Tots Program. Community Service Assisteens help at the city of Glendale's annual Snow Day at Brand Park and spend one Saturday morning in October cleaning and gardening along Foothill Boulevard. Festival of Trees All those who have attended the Festival of Trees will remember the pretty girls holding balloons and offering opportunity tickets; they are Assisteens! Assisteens' philanthropic programs are supported by contributions and two major fundraising efforts: THRIFT ALLEY Funds from staffing the shop with their mother or guardian each Saturday go towards philanthropic programs. ANNUAL SPRING FASHION SHOW Each spring the Assisteens and Assisteen Associates put on a fashion show modeled by the Assisteens. It includes a dinner and silent auction.
